Fungus Gnats Bonsai

Getting rid of the fungus gnats.
Fungus gnats bonsai. Fungus gnats are a fruit fly sized insect pest that primarily affects indoor houseplants. As a bonsai s roots are very important one should be vigilent against gnats. But they re virtually harmless and easy to control. Most of the time just letting the soil dry out a bit gets rid of them.
I would always see them flying around my plants but they also love to fly around my face and eyes. Getting rid of the gnats is fairly easy. A few months back i purchased and brought home a jade plant from a garden show. Attracted to the moisture of potting soil adult gnats lay their eggs up to about 200 on organic matter near the soil surface.
Fungus gnats sciaridae spp are the most common houseplant pest and are distinguished from fruit flies drosophila spp because of their darker color. The gnat larvae live in the upper part of the soil bed. They especially loved my ginseng bonsai. If the plant can cope with drying out a little try keeping it a bit dryer the gnats should disappear.
They like the fungus on peat moss and usually continuously damp conditions. If you re still growing the plant indoors you can order wasp eggs online and hatch them in a greenhouse. After about three days the eggs hatch into larvae which burrow into the soil to feed on fungi and decaying plant material. While fruit flies hang out primarily near fruit rotten food and funky fridges you ll find fungus gnats in wet plant soil in sewer areas and in household drains.
If your bonsai plant is already outdoors place it near these areas so the parasitic wasps can eat the bugs on your. If you let that part dry out the fungus they eat will be reduced and so will the gnats. First stop overwatering your plants. Let the soil dry out more.
If you are using a well draining bonsai medium the problem should go away fairly quickly. Gnats are a pretty common problem with bonsai trees because of the constant watering and therefore moist soil conditions.
