The mushrooms around this english elm are the fruits of a fungus that is growing on small pieces of elm wood in the soil. The appearance of such things in a bonsai pot is enough to cause an instant coronary in many bonsai growers and cause them to run sweating to the shed to break out the armillatox. Afterward you can decide if we indeed have overlooked mushrooms as accents for our bonsai and if they have a place in our art.

Rarely are the fungi themselves harmful to the tree rather as they colonise rotting wood mushrooms seen growing from the trunk of a bonsai will often indicate rot within the wood of a trunk itself.
The fly agarics are quite famous throughout history and are featured in many works of art and literary works. Mushrooms and toadstools are exactly the same thing a generic term that applies to the fruiting bodies of fungi. Bonsai from fungus reishi mushroom cultures are potted allowed to incubate and grow up naturally branched hardwood sticks. Growing as an annual the sculpture like caps reach a maximum size and eventually dry into a long lasting specimen.
