Pacific Madrone Bonsai

So i am excited about these special little trees.
Pacific madrone bonsai. It is distinguished by its smooth trunk orange red deciduous bark white flowers and red berries. Pacific madrone unlike the strawberry tree the pacific madrone is a giant growing upwards of 100 feet with 2 6 inch leaves and 8 inch flower panicles. Pacific madrone although the madrone is arguably one of the most dramatically beautiful of our native trees it is not suitable for every garden. So here is a short video about my madrone trees so far not a lot of online info and what s out there is mostly failure.
Size longevity and form pacific madrones attain heights of 80 to 125 ft and diameters of 24 to 48 in. The madrone is a close cousin to the oak with its two biggest differences being twisted branches and shockingly red flesh just beneath the bark. Arbutus menziesii the pacific madrone or madrona is a species of tree in the family ericaceae native to the western coastal areas of north america from british columbia to california. Its new shoots are bright green deepening to orange and eventually red as the bark thickens.
Hardy to zone 5. This wood is very hard and burns very hot making it a favorite for wood heat in northern ca where it grows amongst the redwoods. If you have the space patience and proper growing conditions for this tree however you will be well rewarded with a specimen that has something of interest all year long. Mature trees reach heights of 6m to 30m or more depending on environmental conditions.
Pacific madrone is a broadleaved evergreen tree and a member of the heath family ericaceae. Pacific madrone is an evergreen tree that is native to the northwestern coast ranges of north america. In the pacific northwest this species typically does not bear fruit. My plan is to make them.
Grows 15 20 feet tall and wide. It tolerates occasionally chilly weather but isn t highly frost resistant.
