Training hawthorn bonsai. The hawthorn is plant that grows like a shrub in most cases and it takes many years to develop thick trunks. One interesting fact is that the buds of hawthorn are not determined. In spring allow shoots to extend until the growth at the base just begins to harden off then cut back by 3 4. Fertilise the tree very well from february late winter until late autumn with a balanced fertiliser.
Prune harder at the top of the tree and less lower down. The root system was seriously damaged. Small leaves white flowers red berries and a nice bark on old trees. Pruning hints would include to pinch out the terminal shoots in spring or reduce the length of the shoot by but avoid doing this too soon as you may loose the flowers.
Instead of digging the tree out after being found it was initially chopped back and left to recover in the forest. Typical styles for hawthorn as bonsai include most styles with the exception of broom and formal uprights. About a year later the tree responded well and started growing strongly again. After being spotted the tree was chopped back significantly and left to recover.
This case study shows a hawthorn found in a forest and trained into a raft style bonsai tree. About a year later the tree was found in a bad condition after being run over by a car. Hawthorn bonsai techniques part 0ne duration.
